California Earthquake Authority (CEA)

The California Earthquake Authority (CEA) is a not-for-profit earthquake insurance enterprise established by the California Legislature. We help Californians prepare for and recover from damaging earthquakes. Earthquakes in California are inevitable, but the damage they cause is preventable. At least a million homes in California may be vulnerable to earthquake damage, especially homes built before 1980. We encourage homeowners to strengthen their homes against earthquake damage and protect their family from the next big quake.

Raised foundation homes and homes with a soft story—a living space over the garage—are especially vulnerable.

A process called seismic retrofitting can help protect peoples’ biggest assets. For many, the process is simple, cheap, and fast. Earthquakes can cause hundreds of thousands in damage and put families and communities at risk. A retrofit can help.
